Garmin GPS – Never Get Lost Again
We expect our new cars come with a gps receiver as standard, and I hope it a portable Garmin GPS. Gone are the days when you have to search through the list of streets when you're driving, or rely on someone else giving you false directions. The GPS device is now almost as familiar as the cell phone and without it, many of us would be totally and permanently lost.
So we all know what they are and do, but where did it start? Not surprisingly, they were originally developed for military purposes, to track ships, submarines, aircraft, etc., but obviously it was not long before the commercial viability of GPS everyday use became apparent.
The GPS as we know it relies on 24 satellites orbiting the earth at any time at a fixed distance of more than 12,000 miles above the earth, even if your Garmin GPS receiver uses only the information of these four satellites at any time.
Each of the orbits 24 satellites in a very precise line which ensures that your receiver is always in contact with at least 3 of satellites. The fourth satellite is needed to synchronize the clocks of other three satellites with the clock in your receiver. Because the GPS system needs a lot of precision timing, this is provided by atomic clocks courtesy of the U.S. Naval Observatory. All 24 of the satellite GPS orbit is equipped with its own atomic clock.
All portable Garmin needs to know where to find the nearest four satellites at a time given. To do this, there is a chip installed in all devices that contain a logbook for each position of satellites at any given time.Likewise, when all the satellites send a signal to your receiver, it also updates the log of the satellite on your smart device, if necessary.
When you determine your position with a GPS device, the accuracy really depends on the type and model you use. Majority Garmin GPS handheld devices give you an accuracy of about 10 meters. If you had a GPS system in the 1990s, you remember that you were fortunate to be in a hundred meters from where you were told you were. When the first member has a commercial use GPS system, it was agreed that the new receivers would be limited precision approx. 100 meters and was done by encoding an timing error in each software devices. Fortunately, this provision was deleted in 2000.
The portable Garmin GPS is as accurate, if not more than any comparable device. You can happily and safely use to get from A to B and even C by D, without ever having to ask his way again. I know a guy that the only obstacle that I must now do more is that the lady giving me directions, is really good this time!
