TomTom ONE 125 – GPS receiver

The TomTom One 125 is not the newest or flashiest portable navigation device on the market, but that's OK. Not everyone needs the latest and greatest. What is the One 125 offers a solid entry level GPS for first-time buyers or for those looking for navigational features the most basic. Similar to the TomTom 130S (except that it does not include maps of Canada or a text to speech features), the GPS is easy to use and affordable at $ 179.99. There are compromises, of course. For example, you get a screen of 3.5 inches instead of a 4.3 inch screen and, as mentioned earlier, you do not receive the feature text-to-speech. But it offers where it counts, with close monitoring and clear guidance and audible.

Design

One thing you will notice TomTom One 125 on the right of the box is its simple and compact design. It is a form similar to the TomTom One 130S, measuring only 3.8 inches wide by 3.2 inches 1 inch thick and weighs 6.7 ounces. It is small enough that you can hold in your hand for navigation on foot or mounted on a bicycle and GPS for pedestrian and bicycle routing modes as a bonus.

On the front you'll find a touch screen 3.5 inch WVGA. With a 64,000 color output and a resolution of 320×240 pixels, the image is strong enough, if the display is on the small side. Having reviewed a number of models 4.3-inch recently, the 125 is One screen is particularly small. However, we have been able to see the cards clearly and easily read menus. The user interface is simple and intuitive, with two pages of menu and large, easy to understand icons. In the Preferences menu, you will also able to change the map colors, adjust the position of the tray on the map screen, select the night mode, and more.

The screen keyboard is a bit narrow given the small screen, so we made some errors when typing addresses. The good news is that the One 125 offers predictive text, it will start to surface possible results when you start entering letters. We appreciate that you can choose between QWERTY and ABC format, and there is also an option to upgrade to a larger keyboard in a smaller, but we can not imagine any reason why you want to do.

There is not much to the NDP. At the top you will find a power button. A mini-USB power connector is on the bottom of the device. The loudspeaker is located at the rear with hooks car holder.

The TomTom One 125 comes EasyPort with a vehicle (windshield and dash), a USB cable, car charger, and reference material. The car is the same as EasyPort one supplied with the TomTom One 130S. The accessory consists of a large circular ring attached to the back of the GPS and an adjustable arm for attachment to the windshield or dashboard disk. To ensure a secure seal, there is also a button to lock the accessory in place.

The EasyPort does not seem particularly robust and we met some problems on the road. We used the method of the dashboard – windshield since technically mounts are banned in California – and for most, the GPS is still in place, but there were a couple of times we rode on some rough parts of the road One 125 and jumped out of the cradle. We understand that TomTom had wanted to keep things simple and small, but we would like to take a larger accessory if it meant more security.

Features

Like the rest of society A series of devices, the TomTom One 125 offers the basic navigation features into a package easy to use for first-time buyers and minimalists. The system comes preloaded with maps of the United States only, and you can enter your destination by address, city, zip code, or intersection. Alternatively, you can choose a location from your Favorites list or recent destinations and automatically route Home from your current location by pressing the Home icon.

The One 125 offers different routing options, including quickest or shortest route, with or without toll roads, and so on. As mentioned earlier, there are also pedestrian and bicycle modes. Once you've entered your trip, you can see the route on the map, directions based text, or to get a functioning demo. If at any time you want to avoid a part of your itinerary, you can press "Find" Alternative "Icon to get new directions. The system also supports automatic route recalculations and Multicast on TRIPS.

The database PND points of interest includes all major categories, including ATMs, gas stations, and housing. Unfortunately, you can not search for restaurants by type of cuisine. If you have more specialized interests, the catalog also contains entries for beaches, campgrounds, cultural centers, and more. There are several ways of plotting to POI: You can search for them along your route, near your destination, or at home nearby.

You can view maps in 2D or 3D. A status bar at the bottom of the screen displays useful information such as distance and direction of your next turn, remaining distance and estimated time of arrival. If you want more or less information, you can customize what is shown on the status bar under the Preferences menu. Exploiting half left of the status bar (where your next instruction is displayed) and repeat the voice prompts give you access to the volume control. It are also two icons in the upper right corner and top left that allows you to zoom and maps.

In addition to visual cues, the TomTom One 125 provides voice directions turn-by-turn, but unfortunately, unlike the 130s, you do not receive the functionality, text-to-speech. This means that you will hear instructions more generic, like "Turn left in 100 feet" instead of the specific street names. Even if the One 125 is a basic system, we still would have liked to have seen the inclusion of the feature text-to-speech.

There are some extra goodies. As the most recent TomTom GPS One 125 includes the "Help me!" Safety device that gives you access to a number of tools and information emergencies. For example, there is a "Where am I?" function that will give you your current location, longitude and latitude, and nearest intersection. In addition, you can find the police station, hospital, car repair shop, and other services with a simple touch of the screen. This is very convenient and gives you some peace of mind, especially if you're in unfamiliar territory.

Performance

We tested the TomTom One 125 in San Francisco and Los Angeles. From a cold start, it took about two minutes for the GPS to get a fix on our situation under cloudy skies, while subsequent starts were much faster. As we drove around San Francisco, the unit did a good job monitoring of our situation and keep our movement. It has also been able to keep a gps as we drove through the Financial District, where tall buildings often block a clear view of the sky.

We used the GPS on two trips: San Francisco to Los Angeles and the other the Marina District of San Francisco at the host city of CNET. We got our start point and end on the first trip, and the One 125 is back with a road in less than a minute. Although the route was fairly straightforward, the NDP gently guided us through several motorways, including Los Angeles as we approached our destination.

We had the same positive results on the second trip. The TomTom ONE provides clear instructions 125 and, unlike the TomTom One 130S, we've been able to hear the voice instructions without any problem. They were loud and clear, but again, we wish to have the feature text-to-speech. Finally, we missed several turns along the way to test the rate of route recalculation and the GPS was able to get back on track quickly.
