HELP! I want advice on FISH FINDERS / GPS units …?
I would ask those who has experience with fish finders, hopefully one with GPS capabilities (to mark the HOT SPOTS!) I have a 97-21ft Maxum to install it in, I do not want a model basement to negotiate price isn't the determining factor. I want one with an ease of use, color LCD screen, GPS navigation, speed / depth, etc. .. I'll use it in freshwater lakes on the inland Northwest (Idaho, Washington, Montana) any ideas?
There are many options you can go with, from bare bones to the best (for the size of your boat, of course). I found that to the best of both worlds (ease of operation, a clear reading, GPS / Sounder / Hot Spots) I'd go with Garmin. Discover the 435 and 535, they are super easy use (only a few buttons) they have all the cards available online, and you can purchase the MapSource software from Garmin to upload more information your Garmin if you wish. Now, the quality if you want a little more important, you should go with Raymarine. They set about the same as that of a Garmin, but at the same time are a bit more complicated. They work very well for themselves, and if you get Navionics maps, you realize you can not find a better graphics everywhere. The detail is amazing, and with Navionics maps loaded, they show maps, depth maps and Hazard / buoys (The Garmin gives some figures in depth, mapping, No Hazard / buoys). Just remember, a premium product you pay a premium price. I would not hesitate to install a Lowrance, but only if the customer wanted a Lowrance! They also Navionics maps, but the machine Quality / Device may be closer to the Garmin or the Raymarine. The trick is to go to a store to sea and is the one you want and where you like best. Be sure to choose a nice place on your dashboard to mount so as not to hinder your community or your field of vision, and not get a Thru-Hull or "puck" style transducer, get the transom-mount transducer. Use 3M 5200 Fast-Dry Wet Cure sealants in all your screw holes to prevent intrusion water, use galvanized or stainless steel screws, and good luck in your choice!
