IPod touch – just a little Perfection
This review may be summer in one short sentence: You're looking at the camera killer course for personal entertainment. But I never, ever, short reviews … So here's long history. Grab a cup of coffee, that this review answers questions you never knew existed.
I must admit that there were some items that caught and kept my enthusiasm for as long as the iPod Touch (which I call iPod touch as an iPod touch). Two years ago, I bought the iPod Touch home last year, I set Upgrade to iPod Touch 32 GB, and now my iPod Touch 64GB version. Was the upgrade worth it? And what are the things be improved? Because even if the touch is nearly perfect, there are still many little things that can be improved.
Equipment
Physically, the new 64GB iPod touch is identical to it to his brothers 2nd generation. This is the back plate is slightly polished crome curve, making it fit your palm perfectly. As before, the fact that it is from polished chrome ensure it attracts fingerprints fingerprints and scratches almost magically. I am no friend of any type of protective covers, and my iPod Touch 32GB last had to live in my pocket with my keys, coins, and other things, I threw her.
After a year, the back plate does take a lot of scratches, and I think the iPod Touch 64GB no better. Personally, I would have preferred a brushed finish for the back plate. This may have caused problems with the legibility of engraving on a measure which applies to the Apple Touch on the back plate, no additional charge (a nice "touch" which becomes increasingly important that the iPod Touch becomes more ubiquitous). This custom print you can get if you order the Touch from Apple (it not available in Apple stores).
The front plate is made of one of the most impressive improvements in glass I've ever seen. After one year of violence heavy glass facade my old iPod Touch not a single scratch – not one. I do not know how Apple is the case, but it really impressive. Remember, I do not use protective covers or movies. The screen itself is glossy, bright, and can easily be read outside, which is a feat in itself. The iPod Touch has an ambient light sensor, it can dim the screen when the environment is dark.
This time, the color temperature of the screen is unchanged (2G changed all the colors from a blue to a more golden color). movie playback is simply amazing. The image is sharp, and natural screen controls. Another time, there are subtleties such as double-tap the screen to change aspect ratio or setting bookmarks, etc. You still can not adjust the contrast a movie, but beyond this small issue, the movie is perfect. See movies on the iPod Touch works just great, but personally I think the screen is too small to watch a full movie. Last week, I tried to watch an episode of the television during a plane en route to Hamburg (a flight 75 minutes), but quickly decided against it, opting instead to play a game of "Luxor". Somehow, I prefer a larger screen for video consumers, while I have no problem doing something interactive it. However, the video plays a lot on the iPod Touch.
Button and interface layout has remained the same since the last generation: the volume controls on the left side, top holds the "exit button 'buttom a dock connector and phone, and the Front holds the single-button. One thing that can be improved here: I would have preferred for the audio connector on the top (or other) that opposes the current configuration use for many applications (eg news and eBook readers) if you want the stand – for example in the gym. Some applications using accelerometers and may be used positioning the iPod Touch in reverse, though.
The loudspeaker is unchanged compared to the latest version. It is low, almost inaudible, single, produced a horrible sound, no volume to speak of – and yet it is one of the best additions to the iPod Touch (the original did not, the 2nd generation did). It is simply so much more casual gaming fun. I do not care about its poor quality, I just love the fact that he is there.
The signatories white Apple headphones with the iPod is sold Touch may seem good, but I do not like them. In my ears, they are too uncomfortable. As I am not an audiophile, I can not comment on their quality other than audio is good enough for me. Anyway, I've replaced my version with non-Apple favorite. The problem here is that Apple has iPod Touch 64GB (and 32GB) with headphones that sport includes a microphone and remote control. And my headphones do not have that. While the remote is little to write home if I want to use the functionality of IP telephony.
Battery life seems to have been some slightly reduced the iPod Touch 2nd generation – at least on paper. During the last days of the New iPod Touch 3rd generation certainly made as well or better than my iPod Touch 2nd generation – but again, that battery is already a year. One thing that I've become very fond of it the ability to fast charge, which works very well.
High wireless connectivity is really nice, with a surprisingly well-executed integration. The iPod Touch does all of its wireless network over WiFi and Bluetooth. WiFi works very well (especially here in Switzerland, where hotspots are dense particularely) integration and Bluetooth (which I tried on the iPod Touch 3rd generation for the first time) is flawless. WiFi reception (range) lags behind that of a Wintel laptop (probably because of the metal plate) and is roughly comparable to that of a 15 "MacBook Pro (which is also a little lacking in the reception area WiFi). WiFi is still the "g" if the variant [Curiously, the integrated hardware supports 11n, but so far, Apple has chosen not to activate, presumably to save battery power. It is also interesting that, in the iPod Touch 2nd Generation, Apple originally included Bluetooth capabilities, but have only enabled with a newer OS. Perhaps the same thing can be expected to 11n]. Bluetooth now works also with a helmet and Bt-based integration kits for the car (which works well in mine). I would have liked to try printing Bt calendar or address book app, but hit a snag: it seems iPod Touch app supports printing …
Missing Hardware
There is little material that I expected or wanted it was included in the iPod Touch – especially as (some) of them are now found on other iPods:
not to worry about taking it to the gym (my gym has very strict rules to articles with camera). All things being equal, the addition a camera (still and / or video) would have been nice, but I did not miss much (actually, I still use the camera my cell phone).
Unfortunately, there is no microphone. This is much more serious omission than having no camera. The iPod Touch is a first class audio recorder and (more importantly for me) a first class client Skype. There are third party solutions for this (mini-micro which are directly taken in the headphone connector), but if the iPod Touch has a built-in mike, it would using world-class applications such as Shazam (and Skype), so easier.
Similarly, there is no compass, GPS receiver or a gift in touch. I understand that they are left to better differentiate iPod Touch from the iPhone, but I would have welcomed in the high end (64 GB) version of the iPod Touch.
And finally, there is no receiver radio. I am certainly not a man of radio, as I next to never listen. However, some people do (like a ton of good sell radio IP applications), and anyway, the Nano now – even with a pause function Tivoesque nice! Why not the iPod Touch? Strange design choices.
iPod & iTunes
The strength of the original iPod was the ease of use simply brilliant – and touch-based interface was a mile-stone in the improvement in this regard. To this day, is simply the best interface media than the iPod Touch / iPhone. It is natural after a few seconds. This drop-dead beautiful, with muted highlights, and cleverly accentuated by small (though flashy) animations that convey different interface metaphors (eg rubber band bounce when you reach the end of a playlist). Since no interface so that you can instantly use it to perform complex tasks, even with just a flick of a finger. Its use is simple, pure fun. Navigation Coverflow album "may be one of the least useful, but it is certainly the most natural (and fun) return if you like music. And it's jaw droppingly well done (note: when you use CoverFlow you must make sure that you have installed the art of covering all the all the music you have not purchased from the iTunes Store).
Underlying all play music iPod is the list reading and use of playlist on the iPod Touch is a joy. The interface while the game is too mature, offering subtleties such as displaying the lyrics of a song on a compression singularity with simple controls for repeat and shuffle. Unfortunately Playlist function has also always one of the most glaring deficiencies: the iPod Touch is not able to play the playlist groups. I usually better group a bunch of songs in the playlist very short (eg '10 Springsteen), then mix in the playlist by filing the largest Just a playlist in a group. While iTunes supports this, all versions of the iPod Touch have stubbornly refused to do so.
Also a bit strangely absent on the Touch is the ability to search an artist or music title. Given that more than 10,000 songs up on the device need a research capacity for something seems obvious (note: key * do * have a global search function, which will also cover songs – as well as contacts and messages that match your search words. seen leaving the iPod app just to find a song cons ease while employment signed Apple is about, and this is not what I expect). And while we're at it, I would also like the ability to search words, but it would the icing on the cake.
What is this, and what continues to amaze me is a function that I initially dismissed as a way to sell songs: Genius playlists. What it does is that, given a song to find other songs you already own that would play well together. Since I have a lot of songs (or I would not buy the 64GB), this feature has helped me get an incredible amount additional joy of my music. There are many hidden treasures that the mass of music I never knew I possessed. Of course, if you want, Genius also recommends songs that you do not, but you can buy now on iTunes. That, of course, is to sell the song "angle. But at least he is incredibly well executed (and yes, I've used)
IPod Touch 64GB now supports voice recognition – And I'm sure it's a marvel of technology. But (somewhat like the system of self-correction of text), he works primarily in English only. If you configure your system to German, you pronounce the names of English group as they would be read aloud by a German speaker only. Do it once, and everyone looks at you in the room. You'll never do it again. Moreover, because of the greater complexity of German (I speak German), commands only work half the time. A good idea, and a blessing while driving or typing. * * But when is set to English.
To complement the feature set of the audiovisual T iPod Touch capacity presentation photo, really enhance the interface iPod Touch gesture based. He was pinching and gesture film that sold me the origin of the iPod Touch, and it still does today. On the Mac, iTunes links in the management of images in iPhoto, which greatly facilitates the task of disentangling synchronize the images on your iPod (on Windows, this task is a bit more down to earth, you have to manually manage the folder "My Pictures"). One oddity, however, is that when iTunes Sync is under-sampled images to a (unknown to me, but certainly) smaller. Since I'm a nut photo (shot with DSLR), this 'feature' that bothers me a bit, as iTunes currently offers no way to control the subsampling photos.
The success of the original iPod has left some competitors scratching their heads, then it is obvious to most users: the tight, seamless integration with iTunes. Now, in version 9, iTunes has become somewhat complex and not always intuitive to use. Now, he is also trying to manage the photos and movies as well as music and applications. But iTunes is still very easy to use, and synchronize iPod Touch with iTunes is simple and fast. A small disappointment is the fact that you can not sync your iPod Touch wireless, and it still refuses to mount as an external drive. Another disappointment is that while iTunes now allows you to share your music on the net with several Mac, it can not play your music to touch (A brilliant little app to the AppStore can do for you, though).
And while we're talking about iTunes – it is a function that I'd love to have on Touch: the viewer. iTunes visualizer is really beautiful, and I wish the same functionality on my Touch.
Internet
While by itself the iPod Touch is an impressive device and fun, it comes into real swing when connected to the Internet. The always-on nature and easy to support the connection drops an iPod Touch Internet devices better than I used for the day. The Safari Internet browser included making great – unless you try to load content based on Flash, which is not supported. The email client works great for receiving and viewing mail. Write something, but the shortest e-mail is boring, like the iPod Touch is simply too small to comfortably enter any amount important text. Calendar and Address Book is well executed (even if you enter a new date and merging multiple calendars is a bit more complicated necessary). Mail, Calendar and Address Book can (if you have this service available) either direct synchronization with Mobile Me (Apple loves to sell you) or Exchange (who loves your employer to force upon you) thanks to a feature that is very similar to "push" notification. In the past, Using Exchange has been somewhat uneven, and Mobile Me has had its share of problems. Overall, if the two very fine job and extremely fast. You do not need to be extended from one access point for this to work, though. A bit disappointing is the fact that notes are not synchronized. Another interesting addition is "Voice Memos", which is an audio recorder. If the iPod Touch's internal MIC, this soft would have been even better …
Applications
Besides the "productivity" or "Follow PDA (Mail, Calendar, Contacts), the iPod Touch comes with a few other nice (but slightly dull) applications (such as maps, stocks, YouTube) and two killer apps: iTunes and App Store. While the first gives you instant access to all the songs and movies that are currently available on iTunes (Note: that the more unbelievable "Shazam" can lead to gross expenditure unintented music), it (App Store) gives you instant access to equal numbers amazing applications you can download and use instantly.
The quality of applications on the App Store is very uneven, and tends to cluster around several subjects rather childish (like a real, um, pile, applications of the art shows). That being said, there are a jaw droppingly good number of applications that are able to use the iPod Touch interface (and other features like the accelerometer) in new and surprising. Just to name a few are the aforementioned "Shazam" to identify a song being played and instantly link to iTunes (it should be seen in action to believe it), Flight Control, you can manage an airport by taking the flight path of each aircraft, Bloomberg provides valuable information in a comprehensive manner, and that shows a Wemlin updated timetable for when the tram arrived at my station. Regardless, there is probably an application supports you with it.
And then there are games. Apple quickly recognized that the iPod Touch is a platform game extremely attractive and powerful. performance, display, connectivity and control to the platform ideal casual gaming. Consequently, the Games represent by far the largest category important in the App Store. Although inevitably there are some really terribly executed, or simply boring games, most games are available least entertaining enough, while some competitors and exceed those that can be purchased for three times the price on platforms dedicated game.
In In the past, my iPod Touch quickly filled with application after application that I could not live without, and one unforeseen limitation of the design of the iPod Touch Surface management app. Applications are organized as icons on a 4×4 grid per page with several pages you can scroll left and right to navigate. Unfortunately, the reorganization of applications, although possible (and very cleverly implemented) is always a chore. Apple has made good thing, and built a much better manager application in the (PC / Mac) iTunes implementation.
Improved speed
The iPod Touch, although seen by some as the "little brother of the iPhone" has always been either as the lable phone or even faster. The new iPod Touch 3rd generation is called "up to 50% faster" than the previous generation. To be honest, I'm not sure I see the speed improvent translate to increase performance much. This may be because my iPod Touch maxes rarely the processing rate or (for example when navigating) that the bandwidth Wi-Fi is the limiting factor. Some applications appear to be "train" to start (small apps) or performance (games, mostly), but overall, the iPod Touch seems to be almost as fast as the last generation. This leads me to believe that the real bottleneck is it the internal memory of the execution (Ie not the 64 GB of storage, but the memory of the processor), and ony applications that are specifically written to take advantage of new technologies (eg, OpenGL ES). Or in other words, the overall rate has not improved accordingly.
SDK
So you want to be a geek? Already? You can write your own applications for the iPod Touch if you want. I took the plunge and downloaded SDK. Note that you can download the SDK and the development of the iPod Touch / iPhone without owning one. The development system comes with an iPhone simulator that you can use to test your applications without downloading them to a real device (it has some limitations: for example, accelerometers are not simulated, and you have no indication of the true speed of execution). Well, you need a Mac for this (although it may be a few years). The SDK is amazing – overwhelming, even if you are not familiar with the programming Mac (and almost prohibitively complex if you are not familiar with frameworks such as cocoa and object-oriented programming). However, your first crunch (Very basic) application is surprisingly easy, and if you drive this way, you will quickly get addicted.
Abstract:
This is the killer personal entertainment device. Buy. You know you want it – especially if you've read this measure. If you have the iPod Touch 2nd generation you may be wondering if the slight hump and the extra storage is worth the very expensive. For me, it was, but performance may vary.
