Bundu Fundi Are Winners of the 2010 Rhino Charge Event
This year’s Rhino charge is over and the guys who took home the trophy are the Bundu Fundi team of Sean, Patrick, Kuki, Kieran, Harry and Kiran ‘Burr-Crotch’ Jethwa.
This was their fourteenth consecutive participation at the event. In 2008, they came third after a mistake at one control point that cost them 20km. That year, they emerged the fourth highest fundraisers with over £27,000 ina year the event raised US$1 million.
The fence was completed in 2009 and the next phase is now to set aside US$ 8 million to establish a trust fund so that the fence can be maintained indefinitely. A variety of vehicles aimed to reach 13 checkpoints scattered over approximately 100 square kms of rough terrain in a 10 hour period via the shortest distance possible.
Competitors are supplied with a 1:50,000 scale map of the venue, co-ordinates of the 13 Control Points and their Start position. During the rally, teams have to make the decision between taking a safer, wider route or taking a riskier more direct route. The teams must then plot the control points on the map and decide their route. Navigation is by compass or GPS and the winner is the competitor who visits all controls in the shortest distance, GPS measured.
This year’s event went a notch higher to create a better and lasting experience for spectators by providing a spectator map that will enable them to navigate around the Rhino Charge. This was made possible through a team effort of Garmin and Tracks4Africa. Since the details of the Venue of the Charge are kept confidential, this information was released in two stages.
In order to access the information, one needed to have a Garmin “Nuvi” or any current Garmin map capable device that accepts a SD card. The cards were available from Titan Avionics at Wilson Airport, Robs Magic or Extreme Outdoors at Yaya Centre and Westgate Mall.
